In this article I will be going over a deck I have gravitated towards for Vermillion Bloodline and the results and my thoughts on my first tournament back from quitting for Nth time. At this point I should just be considered in a perpetual state of quitting. This isn’t the time for me to focus on why my love for DBS has dwindled in the past six months, so let’s discuss the deck I have been playing to try and rekindle my love for DBS.

The deck I have been playing for a few weeks now is Beerus, Furious Strike, running the new Gogeta engine. Simply put, the reason I started playing it was because I wanted to be spicy. Beerus is also a deck I believed was tier 1 in set 8, but never got to play, because Europe had no real tournaments that format. As I’ve learned the deck and worked on it, I’ve gotten it to the point where I believe it to be a fringe playable deck. It has some really bad matchups, some really good matchups, and then some that just depend on the dice roll or the RNG. I do believe that this take on the Gogeta engine is more suitable for best of 1 tournaments, where your opponent may not have as many removal skills against this deck as they would like to have in their mainboard, and the engine really does carry the rest of the deck.

To start, I’ll give you three lists for Beerus: the list I played at the CardMarket event this weekend, the list it SHOULD have been (partially due to me not having access to cards, partially due to the changes I will make going forward after playing it), and finally the list for best of 3 tournament. The best of 3 list may not be card for card optimised, because I haven’t played it in a best of 3 tournament, but will be very close to where I would think it’s good enough. I’ve tried to keep this deck tech short, but I’ve never made short deck profiles.

Oct 31st CM Event List

As you can see with this list – it’s a mess. Random 1- and 2-ofs, no Violent Rays, only 3 Beerus, No Holds Barred. Just some a suboptimal choices I had to make for the event.

Beerus’ main appeal is the sheer amount of removal I have access to, in conjunction with the Gogeta engine. Whis super combos and Whis, Godly Fundamentals allow me to deal with smaller cards on their own, but when used with Gogeta they allow me to remove practically anything in the game without Barrier. I have Beerus, No Holds Barred for mid Combo Step interaction and to lock down the Gohan Reboot leader, buying me a turn. Funnily enough the checkland is actually pretty relevant in this meta, being able to negate the 9-drop Syn Shenron, a 6-drop Gogeta or anything that generates value when it dies is a nice option to have. Super Baby 2 was one of the suboptimal cards I ran, but had its value in slower matchups. I ran Quitella because someone forgot to send their Beerus, meaning it didn’t arrive until halfway through round 1.

There’s not much to talk about with the Gogeta engine other than the fusion targets. I ran 6 of each for consistency. I run 4 Vegeta, Godly Aura, because it is the best fusion target. It grabs me a Gogeta 5- or 6-drop and discards my cards with Drop Area skills or declutters my hand. 2 Vegeta, Preparing for Battle are used for tutoring a Gogeta from my Drop Area, if necessary. I ran a 3/3 split of Son Goku, Godly Aura and Son Goku, Preparing for Battle. Godly Aura can be used to get yourself to four Life, if you feel it necessary to Awaken that turn, but the deck would ideally like to Awaken as late as possible to continue accruing cards with Beerus and for a more explosive turn later on, so I don’t run the full playset. Preparing for Battle is there as a suboptimal negate in a format where Gohan Reboot performs at its best.

The Unisons I ran were 2 Gotenks and 1 Jiren. Ideally, I wanted to run 3 Gotenks. While Jiren is seeing play and performing in Bulma, Gotenks is FAR more valuable in this deck. Like I said earlier you want to Awaken later in the game if you can. A turn 2 Gotenks not only replaces itself, but it also protects you. Most people won’t let that card stick, because if it gets to survive and have markers added by Gogeta, it’s there for good or will be used to kill them. A great use for it is on your Awaken turn. I’ve had Awaken turns where I play Gotenks, Awaken, go into the 5-drop, Overrealm Mira, then play the 6-drop. The difference in energy cost is hugely noticeable. Beerus is not the most energy efficient deck. In preliminary testing, where I played Jiren, I never wanted to play it because it just cost too much.

In best of 1 events I skew the deck towards beating aggro, rather than control. Europe sees lots of cheap aggro decks in those events, and the choices I’ve made to help the aggro matchups don’t hurt against midrange. To have a cheap aggressive option, I play 2 Mira Assault from the Skies and 1 East Kai to attempt to close out games earlier.

Max Kamehameha is the last card worth talking about. It’s just excellent for this format. A powerful way to gain a leg up in the mirror, great interruption with Broly swap, when going first, very useful when combined with Whis, the Spectator against Syn Shenron, and then a negate that can buy itself back in aggro matchups, matchups where the Warp effect is less useful, or situations where you need it.

Real Best of 1 List

Better card choices, better ratios. Let’s break down the difference.

VIOLENT RAYS. This card would have made a literal world of difference for me. It was noticeably missed in the CM event.

4th Beerus. Beerus is one of the main reasons to play this build. He’s very key in the Gohan matchup to lock their leader, buying you turns. Running 4 is a must even in best of 3 events, where Gohan isn’t as prevalent, because if you run less and are forced to charge one on turn 1, that leaves you with only two in the deck.

2 King Vegeta & Vegeta, Royal Bloodline. Ideally you want 10 R/Y cards that aren’t super combos for consistency in the turn 1 charge, so this slot shouldn’t be cut for a mono coloured card. While Super Baby 2 can have its uses, it’s not worth 2 energy. Red/Yellow really doesn’t have many options for good, energy efficient threats. King Vegeta & Vegeta is a 1 energy 20k Battle Card, that draws a card and has the possibility of removing something which makes it the most useful remaining option.

Upping Gotenks Unison to 4. I explained the value Gotenks Unison has earlier. It is the best turn 2 play the deck can have and the first one will almost always be answered right away. This isn’t a card that will hurt to see in multiples.

Putting the fusion targets down to 5 each. To make space for 3 Violent Rays and 4 Gotenks unisons I’ve trimmed the ratios down. The deck filters so much early on that you should expect to see one of each by turn 3. While over the course of a tournament this will affect the consistency of a turn 3 Gogeta, it’s not always the end of the world if you don’t hit one.

Best of 3 list

Not much of a change here, besides Mira being relegated to the sideboard for SS4 Broly Secret Rare and SSB Gogeta, Fusion Onslaught. You don’t want to run either of these cards in a best of 1 format, because if you come up against a blue or black deck that can consistently remove your Gogetas without KO’ing them or any midrange/control deck teched with decent removal, you have two dead cards in your deck. However, these two cards have been amazing in testing, when the combo works right. With all of the deck’s power reduction skills and Beerus’ ability to KO once per turn, it is very easy for you to remove your opponents board. Swinging with 6-drop Gogeta, going into 8-drop Gogeta, and then into SS4 Broly and playing another 6-drop is the most insane thing this deck can do and is game ending if there isn’t an answer. Fusion Onslaught is also the safest choice for you to have against blue because they will be forced to use Trunks God-Sealing Technique and play it to avoid the burn, then your Broly is safe to be played.


Strategies of Universe 7. As stated previously Gogeta is weak to other forms of removal outside of being KO’d, you will want to side into Strategies against the matchups that do this well.

Mira is relegated to the sideboard for SSB Gogeta and SS4 Broly but will come in games 2 and 3 against aggro.

Bardock, Fully Unleashed is tech for Syn Shenron, the mirror (Gogeta decks in general), Dark Broly, and pretty much anything that goes tall. While you can effectively remove cards with your Leader, Gogetas and No Holds Barred, Bardock is a 0 energy removal skill. And 0 energy removal skills that produce an attacker are appealing to me.

Fu, Shrouded in Mystery and Broly, Crown of Retribution are against control matchups.

Jiren, Survival of the Fittest is for Blue decks that want to utilize Android 17 Turning the Tide. I don’t think people respect that card simply because of Jiren’s existence, but it’s a real card and I’ll be damned if I lose to it. Ideally, I would like this to be a 2 of, because I know Beerus vs Blue can be slow so Android 17 is more of a threat against this, than I would like it to be. Realistically siding two cards to deal with a single card is incorrect unless it ever sees more play.

SSB Kaio-Ken is for Invoker primarily, but also has good uses against go wide decks.

Then finally I run a 1 of Kai to increase consistency against aggro, and a 1 of Violent Rays to increase consistency against the matchups where it’s needed.

On to my first experience with the deck in a tournament setting. Unfortunately, I went 2-4. Now you’re probably asking yourself ‘Sandy, how on earth do you think this deck is playable with that record?’ To which I’ll respond, I got SHAFTED by RNGesus. I have never felt a deck fail me, like I had this weekend. I lost 5 out of 6 dice rolls, I lost a game because after drawing 16 cards into my deck I didn’t see a 6 drop Gogeta, I lost a match because I wasn’t able to draw a super combo turn 1, and I was forced to run suboptimal cards to fill slots I was missing.

Match 1 Invoker, Win

This was the only game of the day where luck was on my side. I lost the dice roll which should really spell disaster for this matchup, and all control matchups in a Bo1 format honestly. The only saving grace I had was that my opponents deck really failed them. They weren’t able to play TOP until turn 3, because they had whiffed on their Vegeta. This allowed me to establish a Gogeta and from applying pressure in the early turns I was able to threaten lethal on turn 4, forcing him to use a surge skill to draw and combo out his hand. The game went into top deck mode and I was able to squeeze out the win.

Match 2 Syn Shenron, Loss

The Syn Shenron matchup is very interesting, because it is a matchup that is decided on the dice roll. The deck is favoured going first, but is an auto-loss matchup when going second. They can establish their 9 drop before you get to play anything, you can’t use the tools the deck has to remove it favourably, then they go into Mechikabura on turn 4, after you’ve played Gogeta locking it down, and then having the Vegeta Counter:Play to rest the next 6-drop you want to play. On turn 6 they just spam out their board and there is no way to recover. Going first feels so drastically different and buys you a much needed extra turn before they get to six energy.

Unfortunately, I lost the dice roll so I knew this was over before it had even begun. My opponent also ran the Vegeta Unison from the Toppo Unison expansion pack, Vegeta Unison of Fury. This was some tech that I was really impressed with because its -1 locked all my Battle Cards from being able to attack until he could establish Mechikabura and it gave him earlier access to the Vegeta Counter:Play. Nothing I could have done here.

Match 3 Reboot Gohan, Loss

This one hurt. Beerus, in most situations, should not be at risk of dying turn 2 when going second, because it does not need to swing to gain advantage, meaning the Gohan player needs to see 3 self-awakeners through the first 2 turns and Whis, Godly Fundamentals can normally remove the 1-drop self-awakener they play on turn 1, as long it isn’t Infernal Emperor Frieza.

I lost the dice roll again, and my opponent was running mono green. I knew what I needed to mull for and knew what I needed to do, but when his turn 1 was charge Newfound Power Son Gohan and play Infernal Emperor Frieza I was in for a bad time. He managed to see 5 or 6 self-awakeners, so I had to survive with rested energy. Fortunately, I had most of the tools I needed in the form of Afterimage and Max Kamehameha for his 2nd and 3rd leader swings, but he just had everything. It came down to me having a Hidden Power East Supreme Kai, Beerus No Holds Barred, and a Max Power Kamehameha in hand with 1 life and my single open energy while he had 1 card in hand a board of rested cards and his restand ability. He did combo all, but one cards from his hand in his last attack for lethal with a battle card, so I assumed I was safe and all he had was the restand ability. Next thing I know, battle cards are being placed in the drop and Belmod Double Devastation is here to seal my fate. If I had just seen one super combo instead of any of my other cards besides the negates, I win. But this is the nature of mono green Gohan especially in best of 1, either I have it or I don’t, and I just didn’t have it.

Match 4 Bulma, Win

I lost the dice roll yet again, but this matchup was essentially a bye. It was a Bulma Earthlings deck teched to beat Gohan, Vegeks and all the other potential aggro decks that see play in our Best of 1 format. The deck couldn’t apply any pressure to me, nor could it deal with my Gogetas, Whis, Godly Fundamentals, or Super Combos so I was allowed to just play my game plan how I wanted and when the deck is allowed to do that, it doesn’t take much effort to win.

Match 5 Reboot Gohan, Loss

This was Ryan Kay. For those of you that don’t know who this savage is, he came first in swiss and top 4 at the Salford regional earlier in the year with Gohan Reboot. His deck does something like 28 damage in 1 turn by utilising the 8-drop Triple Strike Successor Gohan, Pan Great Ape Whisperer, and the Ultimate Agent Broly SCR from set 6. I knew as soon as I saw the pairings what I was going to have to be up against. This is the matchup where I REALLY missed out on not having Violent Rays, all of his relevant battle cards are 20k’s or more. My main out to what was happening was Beerus No Holds Barred to remove the Gohan and pray he didn’t have the secret, I didn’t see one and was promptly taken to pound town. To note, this was my 5th lost dice roll in a row, however I don’t think it would have made a difference with the build I was running.

Match 6 Reboot Gohan, Loss

Finally, a dice roll win. Everything was going my way, I was not being pressured as hard as my first Gohan matchup and it was AoD, so it was not as scary as Ryan’s deck. This loss simply came down to very unfortunate RNG. It’s turn 4, I’ve got them at 3 Life and I am going to play my 5-drop Gogeta, however I don’t have the 6 drop. I have already drawn 12 cards at this point, thanks to my Gotenks unison that has stuck. I’m surely going to draw a 6 drop or a Vegeta Godly Aura with my Leader skill and then the draw two with Gogeta. Nothing. I can’t go for game this turn and lose by 5k on the following turn. If I had seen the 6 drop I have three serious swings to knock them from 3 life to just 1 and probably go for lethal removing all their combo power and their ability to give their Leader Triple Strike. The Gogeta would have also made the difference of 5 to 10 combo power defensively, meaning I live. I can’t chalk this loss up to anything besides bad luck, 16 cards into my deck and I haven’t seen either of my 4 ofs. There was literally nothing I could do about it.

Closing Statements

I hope after reading this article you can see why I enjoy this deck. I’m not writing it to sell you on the deck or to get you to go out and buy cards. This deck won’t get you top 16 in a large tournament where people are going to invest in building the best decks and optimising them. However, if you have the cards to play Beerus and want to have a fun experience with a deck, this is something I can recommend. Articles are my favourite form of media I can produce, and this was written to hopefully make an enjoyable read for those that will appreciate it. I’ve learned a lot about the deck, and will continue to play it because I’m having fun doing so and I don’t think it’s bad enough to the point where it’s out of the realm of possibility I can top 16 a CM event and get an invite to the online finals (I just need a bit more luck).
